Raymond Carey has sued the firm for discrimination and breach of contract.

"Foley & Lardner Partner Sues Firm, Attaches Partnership Agreement to His Complaint

A 57-year-old partner in Foley & Lardner's Detroit office has sued the firm for discrimination and breach of contract, contending, among other claims, that he would have been treated more favorably had he been younger, female and/or nonwhite.

Labor and employment practitioner Raymond Carey also says in his 63-page federal complaint (PDF) that he was effectively forced to join Foley and help the firm open a Detroit office when it created a profile for him on its website—and his superiors at his firm saw it and confronted him—even though he had rejected Foley's initial offer of employment, the Am Law Daily reported.

He also alleges various broken promises on the part of the firm, and says he would never have joined Foley had the provisions of its partnership agreement (PDF)—which is attached as an exhibit to Carey's complaint—been revealed to him.

The suit was filed Monday in the Eastern District of Michigan.

Foley & Larder representatives did not immediately respond to the Am Law Daily's requests for comment."
